Meet Kasey
My name is Kasey Hochmuht. I am the owner/operator of Pedal Powered Petals. The idea to start a flower farm came to me as I was riding my bike through Idaho. I had embarked on a solo trip through Idaho’s backcountry when a bikepacking race I had signed-up for was cancelled due to Covid. I had already taken time off from my job as a firefighter for the City of Boise and decided to turn my ride into an exploration of Idaho and a fundraiser for my favorite nonprofits.
As a first responder I deal with a myriad of stressors and extreme experiences. In order to work through many of the events I experience, I have hobbies the “reset” my mind. I enjoy gardening, mountain biking, paddleboarding, etc. I also try to participate in fundraisers in order to give back to my community. While riding my bike on Idahos backroads in September of 2020, I contemplated how I could utilize my reset time to give back. I love to ride bikes, I love to garden, and I love to bring joy to others. During a particularly grueling climb to Dollarhide Summit outside of Ketchum, Idaho I began to formulate an idea for a flower farm. 500 miles later, as I rolled into Couer d’Alene, Idaho I had created a business plan and was ready to dive in. I spent the following winter taking online courses, researching plants, and ordering seeds and tubers. I bought expired seeds from local retailers to help keep costs down and begged my neighbor to let me use a couple of rows in his garden when I ran out of space in mine. When spring hit, I was harvesting as much as I could and learning some very real lessons about having a for-profit farm. I decided to give away all of my flowers during the first year in order to learn what worked and what didn’t and to gain valuable feedback from customers.
Now, going into the summer of 2022, I have an idea of how to make things work and the systems that make it all possible. This year I will be selling flower subscriptions, hosting you-build events, drying flowers to extend my season, and creating ways to give back to my community through flower donations and fundraisers.
I look forward to bringing joy through the beauty of flowers…and getting to ride my bike along the way ;)
